Who's Going To Be The Next Mayor of San Francico ?

It just may Not Be the incumbent Mayor Gavin Newsom this time ... here's why:

Election Day is only a month away but now it's anyone's guess as to who will be the next Mayor of San Francisco.

That's because of the new 'Ranked Choice Voting' system that will be used for the Mayoral Election this November 6th, 2007.

Here is official information from sfelections.org to help you understand why anyone could end up winning the 2007 San Francisco Mayoral Election, no matter how much campaign money a candidate has in their pocket:

Ranked-Choice Voting in San Francisco:

Ranked-choice voting in San Francisco Ranked-choice voting was passed by the voters of San Francisco as an amendment to the City’s Charter (Proposition A) in March 2002.

Ranked-choice voting allows San Francisco voters to elect local officials by selecting a first-choice candidate in the first column on the ballot, and different second- and third-choice candidates in the second and third columns on the ballot.

How it works:

To start, every first-choice vote is counted.

Any candidate who receives a majority (more than 50%) of the first-choice votes is declared the winner.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the first-choice votes, a process of eliminating candidates and transferring votes begins.

First, the candidate who received the fewest number of first-choice votes is eliminated from the race.

Second, voters who selected the eliminated candidate as their first choice will have their vote transferred to their second choice.

Third, all the votes are recounted.

Once the votes are recounted, if any candidate has received more than 50% of the votes, he or she is declared the winner.

If no candidate receives more than 50% of the votes, the process of eliminating candidates and transferring votes is repeated until one candidate has a winning majority.

So, there you have it. If all of the candidates (except Gavin Newsom, for example) were to unite in solidarity and all of their respected constituent voters fill up the 1st Choice and 2nd Choice slots with their candidates then the majority of ALL OF THEIR VOTES could end up going to anyone of the candidates, except for Gavin Newsom.

This is something that several national and local newspapers (like The Chronicle) have overlooked in their haste to declare Mayor Newsom as being some sort of 'all-powerful' 'will win' candidate, when exactly the opposite is true.

This Ranked-Choice Voting System was designed and enacted into law by The People in order to allow progressives and other candidates have a real shot at winning an election, even if their opponents had more money than they do to spend on political advertising.

This way, anyone can be knocked out of the San Francisco Mayoral Election no matter how much money they have. The People could excercise their right to vote in such a way as to elect even the financially poorest of candidates.

What a breath of fresh air this is. To think that even a man or woman with all the money in the world can lose an election based on the Will of The People.

The challenge is to educate Voters and give them empowerment through learning about how much real power they have in their hands. Money alone cannot buy this election.

Think about this and discuss it with your friends and family.
